The objective in Forty Thieves is to move all cards from tableau and stock to foundations. This is a very difficult card game, requiring tremendous amounts of skill and luck.
- Two decks are used (104 cards). Deal ten tableau piles of four cards each, all face up and all visible.
- The player may only move the top card from any tableau pile. They may place any single card in an empty tableau space.
- The foundations are built up by suit, from ace to king. Likewise, the tableau piles are built down by suit.
- The player may deal one card at a time from the stock to the waste, of which the very top card you may use onto the tableau or the foundation. There are no redeals.
There exists an easier version called Napoleon's Exile where you build down regardless of suit, but none of the other rules have changed.
